French guitar with five double courses of strings, probably by Edmond Saunier, Paris, circa 1770, the head with ebony face and shaped outline bearing ten ebony pegs, the back of head and neck inlaid with parallel ebony stringing, the ebony fingerboard with tied frets and two additional ebony frets, the back and sides inlaid with ebony parallel lines, the spruce top with a continuous band of alternating boxwood and ebony inlay to the edges and sound hole, the sound hole with inset fretwork rose, in an ebonised wooden case
